THE PAST AND THE PRESENT OF THE STATE THEATRE OF MUSICAL COMEDY AFTER HAKOB PARONYAN

Yerevan  State  Musical  Comedy  Theatre  was  founded  in  1941, December 23, with  the  performance  of  V. Valentinov’s  “The  Fire  Priestess”  musical  comedy  and  was  officially  opened  in  1942, June  22, with Rudolf  Nelson’s  “The King  is  Enjoying”  musical  comedy.
   1940s  were  the  years  of  creative  raising  of  the  theatre, under  the  direction  of  stage  manager  Vartan  Adjemyan.
    Since  1962  February, the theatre  was  named  after  the  great  Armenian  classic  writer  Hagop  Paronyan. The  first  director  of  the  theatre  was  Zaven  Vartanyan, the  first  artistic  director – great  singer  Shara  Talyan. The  musical  part  of  the  theatre  was  held  by  the  composer  Artemy  Aivazyan, the chief  conductor  was  Aram  Ter- Hovhannessyan  and  the  chief  stage  director – Tadevos  Saryan.
    The  artistic  company  was  completed  with  skilful  actors, singers, dancers  from  Moscow, Leningrad, Tbilisi, Baku  and  Mainly  from  Dony  Rostov. Among these  artists  were  Izabella  and  Hayk  Danzass, Alexandre  Karatov (Karapetyan), Armenak  Ter-Abrahamyan, Edward  Hambartsumyan, Vartuhie  Shahsuvaryan, Nvart  Alikhanyan, Sonya  Eiramjyan, Marina  Sedmar, Martin  Lusinyan, Tigran  Aivazyan, later  on  Karp  Khachvankyan, Seda  Maryan, Alla  Andreassyan, Norair  Mngtsakanyan, Grikor  Simonyan, Meline  Hamamjyan, Svetlana  Grikoryan, Artashes  Arevshatyan.
     Aram  Ter-Hovhannessyan (who  was  also  the  leader  of  the  choir) gathered  a  big  choir  and  orchestra  and  a  huge  team  of  orchestra  conductors, among  them  Raisa  Sarkisova, Tsolak  Vartazaryan  and  Gurgen  Karapetyan. For  a  long  time  the  chief  choreographer  was  Anatoly  Lebedev, who  was  invited  from  Yerevan  State  Opera  and  Ballet  Theatre.
    From  the  first  days  of  the  existence  of  the  theatre  the  stage  design  was  on  its  height. Such  decorators  and  designers  as  Michael  Arutchyan, Sergei  Arutchyan, Alexandre  Shakaryan, Yervand  Kochar, Karo  Minassyan, Ashot  Mirzoyan, Grisha  Sahakyan  were  working  in  the  theatre, doing  great  creative  work.
     Repertoire  of  the  theatre  was  formed  by  the  musical  comedies  of  classics  such  as  Strauss, Calmann, Milleker, Dunaevsky, Lepin. There  was  a  great  demand  of  national  musical  comedies  and  the  performances  of  Tigran  Chukhajyan’s  and  Artemy  Aivazyan’s  musical  comedies  had  a  big  success. Some  composers, such  as  Vartan  Tigranyan,Vagharshak  Kotoyan, Alexander  Harutiunyan, Grikor  Yeghiazaryan  wrote  new  musican  comedies  for  the  theatre.

     In  Yerevan  State  Musical  Comedy  theatre  were  staged  performances  by  not  only  Armenian  stage  directors (Levon  Kalantar, Armen  Gulakyan, Tigran  Shamirkhanyan, Vartan  Adjemyan, Hovhannes  Karapetyan, Tachat  Vartazaryan, Hrachya  Ghaplanyan, Manya  Aslanyan, Vavick  Vartanyan) but  also  by  guest  artists  from  Bulgaria, the Ukraine, Moscow, Tbilisi.

Shara  Talyan  is  considered  to  be  the  founder  and  the  first  artistic  director  of  Yerevan  State  Musical  Comedy  Theatre. His  efforts  to  gather  an  orchestra, choir, ballet group  and  to  form  a  repertoire  gave  excellent  results. He  invited  very  qualified  actors  and  singers, orchestra  players  and  dancers, stage  directors  and  designers  and  performed  foreign  and  Armenian  musical  comedies.

 

ARTEMY AIVAZYAN

Artistic director 1944 - 1947
He  was  a  famous  composer  and  violoncellist. After  Tigran  Chukhajyan  he  was  the  first, who  became  the  founder  of  Armenian  Musical  Comedy. He  was  also  the  first, who  wrote  musical  comedies, whose  plots  were  taken  from  Armenian  contemporary  life  ( “Happy  Day”,  “Old  Illness”).  But  his  best  works  were  “The  Eastern  Dentist”  and  “Better  Late  Than  Never”. He  was  master  of  melodies  and  his  musical  comedies  are  performed  so  far.

 

TADEVOS SARYAN (TER- GRIKORYAN)

years  (1941 – 1955)  Tadevos  Saryan  was  the  artistic  director  of  Yerevan  State  Musical  Comedy  Theatre. He  was  a  huge  personality  both  as  an  actor  and  stage  director. He  staged  more  than  20  performances, among  them  “The  Eastern  Dentist”, “Karineh”,  “Happy  Day”, “A  Big  Wedding”, “Spring  Song”, “The  King  Is  Enjoying”, “Bayadera”, “Rose  Mary”, “The  Princess  of  The  Circus”, “Uneasy  Happiness”, “The  Gipsy  Baron”, “On  The  Bank  Of  Blue  Danube”.
As  an  actor  T. Saryan  played  such  brilliant  characters  as  Mintoev  “Morgan’s  God parent”,  Tadeh  “The  Flatterer”, Balabeck  “Near  The  Spring  Water”, Oskan  “Oskan  Petrovich  In  The  Other  Life”, Arshak  Beglarich “Old  Illness”, Zupan  “The  Gipsy  Baron”, Taparnicos  “The  Eastern  Dentist”.

His  performances  and  roles  are  still  unforgettable  in  the  theatre.

 

ARAM TER – HOVHANNESSYAN

The  famous  maestro  was  invited  to  the  Musical  Comedy  Theatre  in  1942  and  became  the  first  conductor  and  the  chorus  master. He  worked  in  the  theatre  four  years (1942 – 1946)  and  conducted  more  than  ten  musical  performances. In  1942, April  19-20, he  performed (in a concert  version)  Tigran  Chukhajyan’s  “Karineh”. Later  it  was  played  as  a  complete  performance.  Aram  Ter-Hovhannessyan  conducted  such  musical  comedies  as  “Bayadera”, “The  Fire  Priestess”, “The  Eastern  Dentist”, “Silva” (in  Armenian  and  Russian), “Maritsa”, “Poor  Ionafan”, “Better  Late  Than  Never”, “The  King’s  Enjoying”, Serenade”, “Rose  Mary”.

 

IZABELLA DANZASS (KOZODYAN)

Izabella  and  Hayk  Danzass  were  equally  worth  partners  not  only  on  the  stage, but  also  in  life (they  were  a  very  harmonic  couple). They  had  a  great  artistic  talent, a  very  good  musical  education  and  a  huge  intellect. Being  invited  from  Dony  Rostov, they came  to  Yerevan  and  due  to  their  intelligence  and  hardworking, became  leading  actors  of  the  theatre. They  played  Juliet, Romeo (“The  King  Is  Enjoying”), Marietta, Napoleon (“Bayadera”), Stassy, Bonny (“Silva”), Vanda, Herman (“Rose  Mary”), Mable, Tony  (“The  Princess  Of  The  Circus”), Ustian, Nazar (“Nazar  The  Brave”), Pepita, Micky  (“The  Free  Wind”), Katarina, Gremio (“The  Taming  Of  The  Shrew”).

 

HAYK DANZASS (BINARYAN)

The  best  artistic  creations  of  that  talented  couple  remains  Isabella  Danzass’ Natasha  (“Morgan’ s God Parent”)  and  Haik  Danzass’ Arshak  (“Better  Late  Than  Never”).  Besides  acting  Hayk  Danzass  staged  several  performances.

In the  history  of  Yerevan  Musical  Comedy  Theatre  Vartan  Adjemyan  is  a  classical  name. The achievements  of  the  theatre  during  1947 – 1953 years  are  connected  with  his  activities. “Morgan’s God Parent”, “The Flatterer”, “Near  The Spring  Water”, “The  Free  Wind”, “The Eastern  Dentist”, “Karineh”, “In  The  World  Of  Flowers” – those were  the  performances  in  which  brilliantly  showed  themselves  such  actors  and  actresses  as  Tadevos  Saryan, Karp  Khachvankyan, Svetlana  Grikoryan, Artashes  Arevshatyan, Melineh  Hamamjyan, Alla  Andreassyan. In  his performances  Adjemyan  proved  the  leading  role  of  the  stage  director  in  musical  comedy  theatre. He  insisted  that  in  this  theatre  singers, dancers  even  chorus  singers  must  act  as  actors  and  have  a  very  active  position  on  the  stage. It  was  a  new  quality  for  the  theatre  and  the  years  of  Adjemyan’s  directing  remained  as  a  “golden  era’’  of  the  theatre.
